INSIDE

INSIDE is the follow up to the team's previous efforts with "Limbo" - a game that I did enjoy but found to be lacking in certain areas, such as the puzzles which were often too cryptic or had important aspects almost hidden by the artstyle. The artstyle itself was also amazing but unrefined in places.
I do genuinely believe that INSIDE is one of the best games I have played - mostly because it takes the previous work of the team and adds to it in numerous ways without detracting at all. In spite of being a 2D platformer, the atmosphere is palpable in a way you don't often find within the indie scene and every single level is oozing with life.
The lighting and architectural design creates a story of an Orwellian dystopia without necessarily resorting to any exposition or dialogue in general, an incredibly difficult feat within any medium, let alone gaming.
With that said, gameplay slightly falters on repeated playthroughs as the core platforming is far more designed to assist the story and its setpieces or puzzles, rather than be satisfying in its own right. I wouldn't necessarily consider this a downside to the game as it's clearly not designed to be replayed often however.
In conclusion, INSIDE is most likely my game of the year (for 2016 - I am writing this not far off a decade later) and overall one of the more interesting inputs into the "cinematic platformer that involves much child death" genre. Yes, it's a thing.
